The fixed roof coupe C5 was intended to be a stripper model to boost sales; power nothing, few amenities, a rigid structure, a stout manual transmission, and a roaring V8. Unfortunately, the initially-released higher-priced convertible and targa top coupe sold more than well enough to not necessitate the production of a bare-bones Corvette that weighed less, handled better, and was cheap as well.

Looking at this corvette makes me think how cool Corvette history is.
C1 to C2 was a huge styling jump, But C3+ it was a similar design that just got updated.

C5 was one of the last cars to get pop-up headlights, i think. Overall it looks like a rounded C4, while the C6 looks like a muscular open headlight C5, and C7 looks like a sharp angular C6.

I feel like there was a pretty big leap from C3 to C4, though later C3s got more and more angular (straight lines) and aerodynamic. It's been getting more obvious to me in recent years that the design language has largely just been modified from the C4.

Like you said, C5 had smoother curves than a C4, but the influence is there. C6 was beefier looking than the C5, but really not that different (in fact I feel like the ZR1 was very boxy compared to the base... it almost looks like the original C4 ZR1). The C7 was a small leap, but again not much of a change. The Stingray influences are there, but the aero they developed in the 80s still looks very similar.

I do like how it evolves from the C4 though. Kinda like a Pokemon.

I tend to think of things in cycles. Frc/c5z being the equivalent of a simple minimalistic lightweight '57 fuelie vs the style over function models. c2/c3/c6/c7. C4 was about aero and more dedicated to the science of going fast than others....even the c5; but didnt benefit from an all aluminum v8 and transaxle of the c5. c5 designer chose aero over beauty with the tail and took a lot of inspiration from the fd as well I might add C6 more busy and creased per the c3

I guess we haven't seen its final form yet.

Mid-engine. It's more secretive than mew.

Well if it looks anything like that fantasy C&D slapped on their cover, the C4 influences will continue even into the RMR era.
